Princess Vanellope Von Schweetz in Litwak's Arcade's Sugar Rush console was unfortunately, for whatever reason, incorrectly programmed. With the knowledge of how to drive or how to control her "Licorice Warp" racing superpower missing from her memory, she often glitches and is forbidden from racing by her father, King Candy. Even so, she is determined to go against her father's wishes and be a racer anyway.
When Ralph arrives in Sugar Rush, she steals his medal, using it to enter the random roster race. They make a deal where if Ralph helps her get a real kart, she'll win the race and return his medal. After they make the kart and Ralph helps her learn to drive, King Candy fully explains to Ralph why Vanellope cannot race. Ralph tries to explain this to Vanellope as well, but she won't listen. Left with no other choice, Ralph wrecks her kart, leaving her heartbroken. Ralph then leaves Sugar Rush, with Vanellope never seeing him again.
With her kart broken, Vanellope begins sadly wandering through the candy cane forest, where she finds Felix and Calhoun who were not only lost, but have been trying to find their way out to warn everyone in Sugar Rush of impending doom. They discovered the Cy-Bug that Ralph brought into the game multiplied, and soon the entire game is going to be devoured. Vanellope pleads if there's any way to save her game, and Calhoun explains the Cy-Bugs can only be stopped with a beacon, or the game being reset.
Vanellope, Felix and Calhoun hurry to King Candy to ask if he knows any way to either create a beacon or cause a reset, or else the game is done for. King Candy says that if all the racers cross the finish line, the game will reset, and should clear away anything programmed as hostile, would would include the Cy-Bugs. "All the racers", however, includes Vanellope.
Realizing what must be done for the good of the game, King Candy asks Felix to fix Vanellope's kart. From there, it's a race of everyone to the finish line, before the finish line is eaten by Cy-Bugs.
During the climatic race, Vanellope escapes nearly being eaten by a Cy-Bug by learning to control her glitch. Just narrowly, all the racers cross the finish line, resetting the game and clearing all the Cy-Bugs away. Sugar Rush is saved, and Vanellope thanks her father for finally letting her race. She feels like a real racer now, and she promises she won't disobey him anymore. King Candy is incredibly proud of her bravery and what a great racer she is, and when he sees she's learned to control her glitch, he gets an idea. He says that if Vanellope can pass off the glitch as her racing superpower, she can race for real. The plan works, and Vanellope is so happy to finally achieve her dream, and King Candy is just as happy to see her accomplish it.
Though she only knew him for a very short time, sometimes, she still thinks about Ralph, the man who she built her kart with and who helped her learn to drive. She doesn't know where he is now, but she hopes that if he's still out there somewhere, maybe he'll come back one day... and see her race.
Several months after Vanellope becomes a full-fledged racer, something very odd occurs.
During a race, she pushes her glitch to the limit, making herself go faster and faster until she crosses the finish line and wins. For her, winning was nothing special, but she and everyone else in Sugar Rush notice a drastic change has occurred. Something her in code must have been scrambled by her glitch, because the plucky 9-year-old had suddenly been altered into confused 18-year-old.
Her father, knowing a thing or two about code, tries to find out what possibly could have caused this. Upon his investigation he finds some intriguing unused files in Sugar Rush's matrix.
Apparently, Vanellope was originally supposed to have a story line where after becoming a champion racer, she grows up, falls in love with a handsome prince, and lives happily after ever. There was also intended to be a cheat code where if entered, Vanellope would be playable as her 18-year-old self. Her glitch must have somehow caused the activation of some of this incomplete data, resulting in the princess growing up. Unfortunately despite discovering all this, King Candy is still trying to find a way of reversing the process, so Vanellope can return to being 9 years old.
But for now, Vanellope is stuck as a young adult... and not just physically. Too bad her prince never made it into the game...
